The Mystery Egg

My dad bought this piece. I made this page because I cannot find any info about it. It seems to be ivory. If you have any knowledge of this kind of artwork, what the scene is about, please email me! Have you ever seen anything like it? What the pictures don't quite convey is the feel of holding this and looking into such a tiny deep scene. It is really impressive. What I have found so far is that it is most likely made in Japan.

According to some Chinese scholors I was able to ask, this is upside down. Correctly oriented, the first character may mean 'light', and the second they could not identify. Can you read it? Is it a name, and abbreviation, or a title?
